India’s Hindi-language film industry is bracing itself for the busiest time of year, when it rolls out its big guns to coincide with the major religious festivals of Diwali and Eid.

Action thriller Dabangg, starring Salman Khan, gets the peak season rolling with a wide release in India and overseas on September 10.

Khan plays a fearless but corrupt cop in the film, which was produced by and also stars his brother Arbaaz Khan. It was directed by Abhinav Kashyap who is the brother of internationally-acclaimed new wave director Anurag Kashyap (Dev D).

Following that will be Anjaana Anjaani, a romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra and Bollywood’s hottest newcomer Ranbir Kapoor, which Eros International will release on September 24.

October 22 sees the release of the first part of Ram Gopal Varma’s two-part political thriller Rakta Charitra, starring Vivek Oberoi, which depicts the life of the slain political leader Paritala Ravindra. The second part will be released four to five weeks later.

At least two big films are set for release in November — romantic drama Guzarish, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, and Golmaal 3, the third installment in Rohit Shetty’s successful comedy franchise, starring Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Guzarish is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali who also directed the international hit Devdas.

Most of these films will receive a wide global release day-and-date with their Indian release, a strategy which has become Bollywood’s most effective weapon in the fight against piracy.

Hindi films are usually released in countries with large Indian communities, including the US, Canada, the UK, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand.

The Muslim festival of Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan, takes place on September 10, while Diwali, one of Hinduism’s biggest festivals, will be celebrated on November 5 this year.

In recent years, the peak box office season has also rolled on into the Christian festival of Christmas — big releases set for December include Ashutosh Gowariker’s Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, and Farah Khan’s action comedy Tees Maar Khan, with Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif.

Bollywood heart-throb Arjun Rampal wants to move away from the singing and dancing stereotype of Indian films.

Current Font Size:

In his new movie, We are Family, he does just that.

The film is loosely based on the 1998 Hollywood blockbuster Stepmom, which starred Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon.

The Indian adaptation stars Bollywood heavyweights Kajol and Kareena Kapoor.

The story is about Aman, played by Rampal, who, after divorcing his first wife, Maya (Kajol), is set to marry his career-oriented girlfriend Shreya (Kapoor).

But first Shreya must win the approval of his three children, who take an immediate dislike to her.

Speaking to the Sunday Times Extra from India, Rampal said the movie was not an identical remake of Stepmom, but an adaptation with a few differences.

“It is set with younger actors. It is more entertaining and there are parts of it that have moved away from the original, which makes it more real and wholesome,” he said.

The award-winning actor, who has starred in Rock On, Rajneeti and Om Shanti Om, said he did not watch the Hollywood original because he wanted to give his own portrayal of the character to make the movie interesting.

Rampal, a father of two girls, said it was a new experience for him to play a character like Aman, but it was “wonderful”.

“The challenge is that he is the most unsympathetic character in the film. To be able to draw sympathy for him became my challenge as an actor.”

Speaking about Indian cinema, he said Bollywood had come very “strongly into its own”.

“It is a huge industry and has great talents that are rising every day. So I just see it getting bigger and better, and having a lot more to give, because I think my generation of actors, directors and producers are really pushing it and taking it to a new level.”

He said that movies like Raj-neeti – a political drama – were taking Indian cinema to a new level. Even though it did not follow conventional Bollywood trends, it still did well at the Indian box office and overseas.

“These are good signs. When a movie like Rock On comes out with rock music, which people said wouldn’t work, and becomes part of the culture, it’s a wake-up for people. There is a lot of good stuff coming out of India.”

He said that he enjoyed starring in movies that were challenging and pushed the envelope. “That’s how I look at cinema: it is about that rather than doing safe stuff and being stereotypical.”

He is currently working on his latest movie with Shahrukh Khan, RA One, about superheroes.

We are Family was released in local cinemas on Friday.

When was the last time you saw something – on a window display, on Amazon.com, in the flight magazine – and told yourself, “Someday, I’ll buy that!”? Santosh Duggal fights that battle almost every day! His animated family’s needs far surpass his paycheck. After all, how much does an average Indian school teacher make? Probably 3 fancy dinners at the Marriott. But they are happily living in their little middle-class Delhi paradise. And then one day, arrives Phupho, Duggal’s ‘little’ sister from Meerut. She is here to invite them to a wedding at her in-laws and give them an ultimatum: They have to come by a car. The only problem is that the Duggals don’t own a car. Phupho’s solution? “Khareed lo!” There is too much of Phupho’s pride at stake to cancel going to the wedding. So the Duggals gear up for their first big purchase in years. The piggy banks are emptied. The PF is encashed. A loan is in the offing. New hiding places in the house are found, where everyone discreetly kept their savings.. and secrets. But the real battlelines are drawn within the house. The four of them can’t seem to agree on anything – the car, the make, the color.. Like Payal says, “Hamaare ghar par discussions aise hi hote hai!” A mad journey ensues. After putting together all their resources, there is one big hole that remains to be filled. And then comes a gigantic lurking temptation. An easy way out? Will they take it? Do Dooni Chaar will revive your memories of your own family’s story. It is the story of the middleclass man and his tireless endeavor in coping with the fast, new ‘India Shining’. It’s funny, real and heart warming. We all have our own scooter-to-car tales. We are all our own Duggal. Do Dooni Chaar makes us see the Duggal in us with the rare chance to laugh at ourselves.

A temporary restraining order has been extended against Terminator 2: Judgment Day starEdward Furlong in his bitter break-up with his wife Rachael Kneeland.

EXCLUSIVE: Hear Edward Furlong’s Wife’s Call to 911

His ex-lover provided dramatic testimony before a judge at Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, claiming the actor repeatedly drives by her house, once threatened to slit his wrists and has refused to take a drug test when she demanded one over custody of their son Ethan.

According to Kneeland, she spotted Furlong last Wednesday driving by her home. He later parked across the street with full view of the balcony of her apartment, she said.

Kneeland told the judge her new boyfriend had planned to come over, but she was forced to reschedule their rendezvous because she feared how a lurking Furlong would react.

“I was shaking with fear when I saw his car,” Kneeland said, in court.

The next day, she filed a police report about the incident.

Kneeland filed for divorce from star in July 2009 after three years of marriage.

But their relationship has become more volatile since the split and Furlong was ordered to stay away from Kneeland last October after she accused him of beating her up following a heated argument.

Earlier this month, Furlong was handed yet another restraining order from Kneeland, banning him from contacting or approaching his ex and their three-year-old after allegedly leaving a series of profanity-laced voicemails on her phone.

However, a judge modified the order Tuesday, granting Furlong custody of Ethan each Tuesday and Thursday after school — and either Saturday or Sunday for three hours.

A private mediator will transport the child to and from each parent during these scheduled visits.

The judge ruled today that the existing TRO will remain in effect until September 27 when the two are expected to return to court to address their remaining issues.

If you had come to me in the past couple of years and told me that you were working on a movie called “Clear Blue Tuesday,” I would have said, “Wow! A movie about feminine hygiene products? That could be really cool and edgy, even gloriously feminist with the right approach!” But then, if you had told me it was actually a movie about the September 11th attacks, I would have said, “Oh, well, I’m really not sure about that.” And then, if you had added, “And it’s a rock musical,” I would have definitely sought a way to extricate myself from the conversation.

But that’s just me! If you haven’t already heard, “Clear Blue Tuesday” — which opens Friday in Greenwich Village — focuses on the lives of eleven people, post-9/11. As Michael Wilson at the New York Times‘s CityRoom blog reports, as the calendar passes through the anniversaries of the attacks, an “attractive and eccentric cast of New Yorkers fall in love and split up, lose jobs, get jobs, shack up — and sing, roughly one song per character.” It’s really involved!

The songs are all over the map, stylistically and thematically, and include one called “Help Me Help You,” sung by an executive firing a depressed underling, and “Spank It,” a hair-metal piece about playing the drums. In another song, “Reckless,” the singer’s character — a harpist and science fiction fanatic — imagines marrying an alien in space in a scene replete with twinkling stars and floating planets.

If the project has anything going for it, it’s that it’s heart seems to be in the right place. The actors in the movie have all written their own songs and everyone clearly believes in the power of art to heal. One of the participants is Jan O’Dell, a 73-year-old Off-Broadway actress who received a brain injury on 9/11 after she was struck by debris from the World Trade Center. Wilson says O’Dell — who comes across as the sort of woman you’d be lucky to know — is the “beating and wounded heart” at the center of the film.

Maybe it’s just this line from the Times write-up that bothers me:

The film, often doggedly cheerful, will not please uniformly, and only die-hard fans of musicals, very earnest people and Sept. 11 completists are likely to digest it whole.

I sort of hope there’s actually no such thing as a “Sept. 11 completist.”

Amazon is gearing up to take on Apple, Google, and Netflix, and move beyond its own video-on-demand offering, with a new subscription service, the Wall Street Journal reports .

People familiar with the matter tell the WSJ that Amazon has been pitching the subscription service to media heavyweights like NBC Universal, News Corp., Time Warner, and Viacom over the past few weeks. (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is pictured right.)

The company is focusing on older content, similar to Netflix’s approach with its Watch Instantly streaming service, those sources say. Also like Netflix, Amazon is planning to make the service available on the web and Microsoft’s Xbox 360, as well as TVs and Blu-ray players connected to the web.

Amazon’s timing certainly isn’t accidental. Apple is expected to unveil the latest version of its Apple TV later today, and if rumors are correct, it’ll be announcing 99-cent TV episode rentals at the same time. Google is pursuing rentals on YouTube , which will also be available on its Google TV service later this week (Amazon’s service would most likely find its way to Google TV as well). And of course, Netflix’s streaming service is still going strong — rumor has it that Apple will announce that it’s part of the new Apple TV later today.

While it makes sense for Amazon to pursue a streaming service, it definitely won’t be easy. The company’s on-demand video offering could never really compete with iTunes, and now with Apple working on a streaming offering of its own, Hulu finding its way to TVs, and the rising popularity of Netflix, Amazon may have an even more difficult time competing in this market.

There are moments in sports history never to be forgotten, and one of those is Secretariat’s 31-length triumph in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.

The Walt Disney Co. is releasing its new film, “Secretariat,” on Oct. 8, which tells the story of a determined owner, Penny Chenery, a flamboyant trainer, Lucien Laurin, and a Triple Crown horse that seemingly had wings.

I watched a screening on Tuesday, and to see the grace, power and majesty of thoroughbreds up close was a reminder how intoxicating the sport truly is.

Most memorable are the closeups of the horses’ eyes. You wonder what they are thinking and feel their emotion.

I was 14 in 1973 and remember being in awe how a horse could be so dominant with so much on the line in a singular performance that still stands as the fastest time for 1-1/2 miles in Belmont Stakes history.

Horse racing fans will cherish the movie, as will those who grew up in the 1970s. Fans of actor John Malkovich will rave about his funny, quirky portrayal of trainer Laurin.

And the movie comes out just as another super horse, the unbeaten mare Zenyatta, is writing her own movie script, being 18 for 18 while preparing to end her career in the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6 at Churchill Downs.

If Secretariat and Zenyatta were to race, who would win?

It would be the race of any century.

In “Machete,” blades flash and body parts are sliced. Heads roll. And hands, torsos, legs and other limbs.

Robert DeNiro drawls, wears a cowboy hat and guns down illegal immigrants with a hunting rifle.

Steven Seagal is a Mexican drug lord with samurai sword skills.

Jessica Alba showers, Lindsay Lohan skinny dips and Cheech Marin wears a clerical collar as a priest with an ear for profanity.

And Danny Trejo, whose 10-miles-of-bad-road face and tattooed body have made him one of the screen’s most recognizable bad guys, plays the hero, a lawman named “Machete.”

The Robert Rodriguez movie that began life as a howled-for trailer in the exploitation spoof “Grindhouse” is a cutting edge spoof of ’70s B-movies. It’s a Hispanic American version of a blaxploitation film of the “Super Fly”school, with bloody action, titillating nudity and a catch-phrase riddled script.

And like those ’70s movies it borrows from, there’s a blast of tongue-in-cheek politics built around a “They messed with the WRONG Mexican” message. No, this may not go over in Arizona.

We meet Machete as he crashes in on drug dealers south of the border, getting his partner, wife and child killed in the process. The bad guy Torrez (Seagal) has too much power, too much reach. Machete barely escapes with his life.

Years later, he’s in Texas, struggling to survive as an illegal immigrant despite the help of “The Network,” an underground railroad for illegals run by Luz (Michelle Rodriguez) out of her taco truck. They’re all on the lookout for the Latina immigration cop (Jessica Alba) who is quick to deport her “brothers and sisters.”

A well-heeled politico named Booth (Jeff Fahey) hires Machete to assassinate an immigrant-bashing state senator (DeNiro). Soon the cops, immigration, and Booth’s henchman (led by Lake Mary’s Shea Whigham) are after the migrant worker they don’t realize is a slicing and shooting killing machine.

“I don’t know how you know what you know, but I’m glad I know you,” Luz purrs.

Our hero is on the run from a vast conspiracy that wants tougher immigration laws, higher fences, vigilantes (Don Johnson) who have declared open season on Mexicans.

Trejo, now well into his 60s, is only so-so in his first leading role, never really comfortable center stage. Rodriguez (he takes only a co-directing credit) surrounds him with actors in his thrall — which helps. Fahey, Seagal, DeNiro and Johnson take things way over the top, and the ladies — Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and even Linday Lohan — all melt in his presence.

But Machete — he’s a myth, a phantom. And Phantoms don’t stay in touch.

It’s all a gory goof, as veteran horror movie makeup guy and actor Tom Savini turns up as a hitman (1-800-HITMAN), a John Woo-style shootout and torture scene takes place in a church and Lohan dons a nun’s habit.

That makes it hard to take the “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us” pro-immigration message seriously. But if it makes people think twice about “messing with the wrong Mexican,” no doubt the “Machete” cast and crew will call that a win.

Cast: Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert DeNiro, Don Johnson, Jeff Fahey

Industry Rating: R for strong bloody violence throughout, language, some sexual content and nudity.

Daniel Radcliffe, the wand-flicking wizard from the Harry Potters series features in Forbes Magazine’s list of best value actors in Hollywood. The list has been compiled taking into consideration how much an actor’s film harvest in the box office as compared to their fees.

1. Actor Shia LaBeouf has topped the list for the 2nd year running. His films from The Transformers franchisee and 4th Indiana Jones movie have reaped a profit of 81 pounds at the box office for every 1 pound paid to him.

2. Ravishing Anne Hathaway takes the 2nd place primarily coz of her participation in the fantasy fiction ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Her movies made 64 pounds for every 1 pound paid to her.

3. Daniel Radcliffe, the global heart throb, owing to his captivating talent and mega hit Harry Potter saga has catapulted to the 3rd place.

4. Robert Downey Jr’s hit ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Iron Man 2’ make him the 4th best value actor.

5. Jennifer Aniston and Meryl Streep share this rung. Even though, Aniston’s film ‘Love Happens’ had a miserable run, her ‘The Bounty Hunter’ harvested 88 million pounds giving her a respectable position in the list. In all, Jen’s flicks made 21 pounds for every 1 pound paid to her. (ENSNN)
